The Presidency has extended the deadline for Nigerians and other stakeholders to submit memoranda and position papers on the proposed National Policing Bill.
The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill announced that submissions will now close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The extension was contained in a statement signed by the Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The group said the additional time would allow individuals, organisations and institutions that had not yet participated in the consultation to make detailed contributions to the proposed legislation.
According to the statement, the Working Group wants the drafting process to benefit from broad input and the experiences of Nigerians and other relevant stakeholders.
The proposed National Policing Bill is expected to provide the administrative, operational, institutional and funding framework for a new policing structure that can respond more effectively to Nigeria’s security challenges.
The framework is also expected to include measures aimed at promoting professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Gbajabiamila encouraged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security experts, state governments, professional associations, academics and members of the public to use the extended period to submit their views.
Submissions must be made through the official National Policing Bill portal before the new deadline.
The Working Group said stakeholders should pay attention to key areas such as funding, command structures, recruitment and training, jurisdiction, cooperation between security agencies, accountability and measures to prevent political interference.
The group said these issues require careful consideration to ensure that the proposed policing system is effective, sustainable and suited to the security needs of communities across the country.
At the end of its consultation, the Presidential Working Group plans to produce a final draft of the National Policing Bill for further legislative action.
The group thanked individuals and organisations that had already submitted their memoranda and urged others who wished to participate to take advantage of the extension.
The National Policing Bill portal was opened on August 3, 2026, when the Presidency initially announced the consultation period.
The Working Group is expected to submit the completed Executive Bill package to President Bola Tinubu for review on September 3, 2026.
