At least 14 members of the Nigerien Defence and Security Forces were killed after terrorists launched a coordinated attack on a military position before ambushing reinforcement troops in the Diffa Region of southeastern Niger.

The deadly incident occurred on Friday morning in N’Guigmi, a town located in the Diffa Region, according to security reports.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a report shared on his official X account, stating that the attack began at about 9:30 a.m. on July 31.
According to the report, heavily armed terrorists advanced into the town from the Sabon Carré area, situated southwest of N’Guigmi, before attacking a National Guard base located close to the town’s cemetery.
The assault triggered a swift military response, with additional security personnel deployed to pursue the attackers as they retreated from the scene.
However, the reinforcement team reportedly walked into a carefully planned ambush about one kilometre south of the National Guard position.

The ambush resulted in heavy casualties among the security forces.
Preliminary reports showed that 14 security personnel lost their lives during the attack.
The victims included 10 soldiers of the Niger Armed Forces (Forces Armées Nigériennes, FAN), among them an officer, as well as four members of the National Guard.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting security forces in southeastern Niger, a region that has faced repeated attacks from terrorist groups operating around the Lake Chad Basin.
Security agencies are yet to release additional details on the operation or provide information on possible casualties among the attackers.
Authorities have also not announced whether further military operations have been launched to track down those responsible for the assault.
