University Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have been suspended after the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries.

The industrial action followed a decision made at the union’s congress on Friday. Members resolved to stop all academic duties after the Ondo State Government failed to pay their salaries for May and June.

Speaking in Akure, the Chairman of ASUU at AAUA, Dr Boluwaji Oshodi, confirmed that the union had officially informed the university management about the strike. He explained that the action was in line with resolutions previously adopted by the branch on April 28 and June 18, 2026, over delays in salary payments.

Oshodi said lecturers had been instructed to withdraw from teaching, supervision, meetings, and all other academic responsibilities until the two outstanding salaries were fully paid.

He explained that the union was also acting in line with a standing resolution of ASUU’s National Executive Council, which directs branches to begin industrial action whenever salaries remain unpaid by the third day of the following month. According to him, despite waiting beyond the deadline for both May and June salaries, the payments were still not made, leaving the union with no option but to embark on an indefinite strike.

The ASUU chairman said the crisis was not caused by the university management but by the Ondo State Government, which he accused of failing to provide adequate funding for the institution and meet its financial obligations.

Attempts to obtain a reaction from the university’s spokesperson, Victor Akinpelumi, were unsuccessful, as he could not be reached for comment at the time of filing the report.
