The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has asked the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, to apologise to airport officials and pay a N25,000 fine over the clamping of his vehicle at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Keyamo announced through his official X account that Obi has one week to comply with the directive. He warned that failure to do so would lead to further action by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The minister’s response followed Obi’s recent claim that airport authorities wrongly clamped his vehicle. Obi had described the incident as part of what he believed was a pattern of intimidation by the Federal Government.

The former Anambra State governor also said the alleged harassment had become so serious that he was no longer certain he would be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Reacting to the claims, Keyamo said he ordered an internal investigation into the matter and reviewed the airport’s CCTV recordings.
According to the minister, the footage showed that on July 4, 2026, Obi’s vehicle was left unattended for about 30 minutes in a designated drop-off area after his police driver entered the airport terminal. He said the unattended vehicle created a security concern.

Keyamo explained that airport officials clamped the vehicle without knowing who owned it. He added that the vehicle was later released after Obi spoke with the airport manager by telephone.
The minister further claimed that Obi used his influence to secure the release of the vehicle without paying the standard parking penalty.
He also accused the former presidential candidate of turning the incident into a political issue by presenting it as harassment instead of accepting responsibility for the parking violation.
According to Keyamo, leaving a vehicle unattended in a restricted airport drop-off zone for that length of time breached airport safety procedures and posed a security risk based on international standards.
The minister therefore demanded that Obi publicly apologise to the airport workers involved in the incident and return to the airport to pay the N25,000 fine for the parking violation.
He warned that if Obi fails to meet both demands within one week, he will direct the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to begin further action over the matter.
