Over 700 Nigerians Awaiting Rescue In S’Africa

More than 700 Nigerians remain stranded in South Africa as the June 30 deadline issued by anti-immigration groups draws closer.

Although President Bola Tinubu approved funds for more evacuation flights, delays in releasing the money have slowed the rescue operation, leaving many exposed to growing xenophobic threats.

Officials said over 1,000 Nigerians registered for evacuation, but only 324 have returned home so far.

Air Peace, expected to handle more rescue flights, has reportedly delayed further operations until payment is confirmed, while a privately funded ValueJet operation brought home 66 evacuees earlier this week.

Community leaders said renewed attacks have claimed more than 20 Nigerian lives since late 2025, while many others have been assaulted, displaced or forced to abandon their businesses.

Nigerians still in South Africa also reported living in fear, with many staying indoors as anti-foreigner protests continue.

The Nigerian High Commission assured citizens that evacuation flights would resume once logistical issues are resolved.

It urged those already screened to remain on standby, saying they would be contacted individually when flight arrangements are completed, while also seeking stronger protection from South African authorities.
