Oyo NUT Rejects School Resumption

Public schools in Oyo State will remain closed as the Nigeria Union of Teachers insists that stronger security measures must be put in place before teachers return to classrooms.

The decision follows the abduction of more than 40 pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, an incident that has heightened fear among educators and parents.

The union said the situation worsened after two teachers were killed and several victims remained in captivity.

According to the NUT, many teachers no longer feel safe at work, while some parents have started withdrawing their children from school because of security concerns.

Union leaders disclosed that discussions had been held with government officials and security stakeholders, with recommendations already submitted for action.

They said schools could reopen once concrete security steps are implemented, abducted victims are rescued and confidence is restored among teachers, pupils and parents.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command dismissed a viral video claiming the abducted victims were flown to Kaduna by helicopter, describing the report as false and misleading.

The police said rescue operations were ongoing and warned against spreading unverified information that could hinder security efforts.
