Tinubu’s Government Contradicts The Spirit Of June 12 – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of acting against the values that inspired the June 12 democracy struggle.

In a Democracy Day message, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate urged Nigerians to resist poor governance and defend democratic principles ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said the country was witnessing increasing pressure on opposition parties through political disputes, defections and what he described as the misuse of state institutions.

According to him, agencies and institutions meant to serve the public have increasingly been drawn into political battles, creating concerns about the health of Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku recalled his involvement in the fight against military rule, saying he suffered personal losses and was forced into exile during the struggle for democratic governance.

He also referenced the June 12, 1993 election and the sacrifices made by pro-democracy campaigners, activists and ordinary Nigerians who fought for the return of civilian rule.

The former vice president warned that democracy should not be taken for granted, arguing that citizens must remain vigilant against any threat to democratic institutions.

He called on political groups, civil society organisations, labour unions and young people to work together in protecting the country’s democratic system and ensuring that the gains of June 12 are preserved.
