Parties Rush To Beat INEC Deadline

Political parties across Nigeria are moving quickly to settle disputes, complete candidate lists and conclude talks on running mates after the Independent National Electoral Commission fixed June 26 for access to its nomination portal and July 11 as the deadline for candidate submissions.

The development comes as parties prepare for the 2027 general election and race to meet key electoral requirements.

INEC said authorised party officials would receive access codes to upload candidates’ details, warning that the portal would close automatically once the submission period ends.

The commission also raised concerns about unresolved court cases and internal party crises, saying such issues could affect smooth preparations for the election if not resolved promptly.

Several parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Young Progressives Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Social Democratic Party and Labour Party, said they were taking steps to meet the deadline.

While some are still addressing post-primary complaints, others have completed candidate documentation and are waiting for the portal to open before making their submissions.

Attention is also turning to vice-presidential selections, with the Labour Party, SDP and ADC still holding consultations on possible running mates.

As political activities gather pace, parties are under pressure to conclude internal processes and present united fronts ahead of the next phase of the election timetable.
