The ICPC and Aichatou El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, are now locked in a legal dispute over alleged defamatory remarks made by the anti-graft agency.

Aichatou, through her lawyers, issued a N2bn pre-action notice after the commission released a statement concerning access restrictions at its Abuja headquarters.

Her legal team accused the ICPC of damaging her reputation by referring to her as “a woman who identified herself as the wife of a defendant” and describing some of her public claims as false.

The lawyers argued that the statements questioned her integrity and exposed her to public embarrassment both within and outside Nigeria.
The lawyers also faulted claims that she breached visitation procedures and created unnecessary media attention over her husband’s detention.
They maintained that the publication unfairly portrayed her as dishonest and disrespectful of official protocols, despite being a private citizen with what they described as an unblemished record.
Reacting to the development, ICPC spokesperson John Odey said the commission had not yet received the legal notice and would verify the matter on Monday.
Aichatou’s lawyers demanded a public apology, retraction of the statements, and compensation within 14 days or face legal action in court.
