No Plot To Rename Nigeria – Presidency
The Presidency has denied reports claiming President Bola Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and scrap Sharia law in the North.
The government described the story as false and politically motivated ahead of the 2027 elections.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said there was no plan to send any constitutional amendment bill known as “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly.
He added that the report was created to stir tension and confusion across the country.
According to the Presidency, constitutional amendments cannot be carried out by one individual or political group alone.
It explained that such changes require approval from both chambers of the National Assembly and at least 24 state assemblies before becoming law.
The government urged Nigerians to ignore the report and remain cautious of fake political stories as campaigns for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
It also stated that Tinubu’s attention remains on economic reforms and governance.
