A civil society group, Defence for Democracy, has faulted the Peoples Democratic Party over its decision to clear former Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, for its Enugu State governorship primaries.

The group said the move raises concerns due to ongoing questions about his academic credentials. The development comes ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

The group warned that the PDP could face legal and political problems if Nnaji becomes the party’s candidate and the allegations are later challenged in court.

It said the screening process appeared to ignore serious concerns already in the public space. The organisation also pointed to possible risks for the party’s image.

According to the group, opposition parties could take advantage of the situation if it escalates into a legal dispute after the election.

It stressed that political leadership should be based on clear records and public trust. It added that unresolved issues could affect voter confidence in Enugu State.

The organisation urged Nnaji to address the allegations against him before continuing his political ambition.

It also called on the PDP national leadership to review its decision and strengthen its screening process. The group said the party risks avoidable damage if the matter is not handled carefully.
