Dangote Picks Kenya Over Tanzania For Africa Refinery

African billionaire Aliko Dangote is considering Kenya as the preferred location for a proposed $17 billion oil refinery planned for East Africa.

The refinery, expected to process 650,000 barrels per day, may be sited in Mombasa instead of Tanzania’s Tanga port due to Kenya’s larger economy and deeper seaport facilities.

The move comes weeks after Kenyan President William Ruto announced talks on a regional refinery project in Tanzania based on the model of the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.

Dangote later said Mombasa appeared more suitable because of stronger fuel demand and better infrastructure.
The businessman explained that the project would depend heavily on support from the Kenyan government, including land allocation, financing and protection against cheap fuel imports from countries such as Russia and India.
He warned that refineries could struggle to survive without government-backed protection policies.
Dangote also revealed plans to expand his Lagos refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million within the next 30 months.
He said Africa must continue investing in its own industrial growth instead of depending heavily on foreign markets for refined petroleum products.
