The Nigeria Democratic Congress has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South and approved a single four-year term arrangement ahead of the next election.

The decision was reached during the party’s national convention in Abuja on Saturday.

The move is expected to boost the chances of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, within the growing opposition alliance.
Party chairman Moses Cleopas said the arrangement was designed to balance regional interests and maintain stability within the coalition.

He explained that after the South completes the proposed single term in 2031, the presidential ticket would return to the North.
Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso backed the zoning formula, saying the party had continued to attract support since the recent realignment.
He added that the zoning decision followed the party’s internal agreement on fairness and inclusion.
Speaking at the convention, Obi said the opposition must protect multi-party democracy and work towards a free and credible election in 2027.
He blamed the country’s hardship on poor governance and rising insecurity, while urging supporters to begin mobilisation across the country.
