The Senate has passed the 2026 Electoral Act Amendment Bill aimed at fixing legal gaps in the handling of pre-election disputes.

The bill was adopted on Thursday after the presentation of a report by Senator Simon Lalong, who chairs the Senate Committee on INEC.

Lawmakers said the amendment would reduce confusion caused by conflicting court rulings and delays in electoral cases.

The bill also seeks to stop politicians from filing multiple suits in different courts to secure favourable judgments before elections.
Under the proposed changes, pre-election matters involving governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections will begin at the Federal High Court before moving to the Court of Appeal.
Cases involving presidential elections will start directly at the Court of Appeal, with appeals going to the Supreme Court.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the committee after the bill was passed and expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would sign it into law.
Lawmakers said the amendment would strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of future elections.
