Tinubu Orders Senate To Reverse Controversial Rule

The Nigerian Senate has cancelled its controversial amendment to the Standing Orders after pressure from the Presidency and growing opposition within the chamber.

The decision was taken during Thursday’s plenary after a motion led by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, under the supervision of Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin.

The reversed amendment had restricted eligibility for Senate leadership positions to lawmakers with at least two consecutive terms.

Critics argued that the rule was designed to strengthen the position of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, ahead of the 2027 political race.

Sources claimed the Presidency ordered an immediate reversal after concerns over the implications of the change.

The controversy had already sparked tension in the Senate following a clash between Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole during plenary.

Oshiomhole openly challenged the amendment, leading to heated exchanges and warnings from Senate leaders on the chamber floor.

With the reversal, senators previously blocked by the amendment can now contest for top positions in the 11th National Assembly.

The development is expected to reopen political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections and intensify the battle for Senate leadership.
