In Federal High Court in Lagos, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project and the Nigerian Guild of Editors have filed a lawsuit against the National Broadcasting Commission over its recent warning to broadcasters.

The groups described the directive as unlawful and an attack on press freedom.

The case, filed on April 24, 2026, challenges parts of the broadcasting code used by the NBC to caution stations against certain forms of commentary and presentation styles.

The plaintiffs argue that the rules are too vague and could be used to silence journalists.
They maintained that journalists have the right to express opinions, analysis and commentary as part of their professional duties.
According to them, restricting such expression undermines constitutional rights and weakens democratic discussion in the country.
The suit also warns that enforcing the NBC directive ahead of the 2027 elections could limit public access to diverse political views and encourage self-censorship among media workers.
Legal practitioner Femi Falana is leading the legal team, while no hearing date has been fixed.
