The action follows a decision reached at its National Executive Council meeting over a dispute with the Federal Government.

The crisis centres on plans to halt the revised Professional Allowance Table agreed after the 2025 strike.

The union said the move breaks earlier agreements on improved pay, including duty, shift, and rural allowances, after delays in implementation since early 2026.

Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim said, “The National Executive Council was informed about the Federal Government’s decision to remove the Professional Allowance Table, a development deemed unfortunate.”

He added, “We demand the reversal of the decision to cease the implementation of the PAT starting in April 2026.”

“There must be immediate payment of promotion arrears and salary arrears in affected centres, as well as the prompt conclusion of the process of paying the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.”

The strike is expected to disrupt services nationwide, with resident doctors forming the backbone of care in public hospitals.

Concerns are rising over delays in treatment and added pressure on private facilities as the health system faces another shutdown.
