The decision was reached during an emergency meeting on Wednesday as concerns grew over declining oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important crude oil routes.

The agency said the coordinated release is the largest in history and is intended to ease pressure on global oil supply and calm markets already shaken by the disruption of shipments across the Persian Gulf.

Energy officials believe the move could help reduce volatility in oil prices, although analysts warn that markets may remain sensitive to developments in the region and the gradual restoration of shipping activities.
