Ramadan Blamed For Kano Low Turnout

In Kano State, the Independent National Electoral Commission has linked the poor voter turnout in Saturday’s House of Assembly by-election to the Ramadan season and the belief that the race involved only a few candidates.

The explanation was given during a visit to polling centres in Kano Municipal.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Abdu Zango, said the exercise went on without violence and praised residents for keeping the peace.

He noted that security was stable and that the voting process remained calm across the areas inspected.

Despite the quiet atmosphere, many polling units recorded only a handful of voters.

Zango explained that fasting during Ramadan may have kept people indoors, while others felt the contest was too small to attract wider interest.

He also brushed aside concerns over the absence of some opposition parties, saying it is up to political parties to field candidates who meet the requirements of the Electoral Act.

INEC maintained that the election was conducted smoothly, even as observers reported thin crowds in several locations.
