The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, criticised the House of Representatives for abandoning its earlier support for real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The party called the move a surrender to the Senate’s “anti-people” choice.

The reaction came after both chambers of the National Assembly passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill on Tuesday.

The bill now allows election results to be transmitted using both manual and electronic methods, a compromise opposed by civil society groups and opposition figures.

PDP spokesperson Comrade Ini Ememobong said the House had originally backed mandatory real-time electronic transmission, ensuring transparency and reducing delays.

However, the Senate’s insistence on a hybrid system led to the joint adoption of the compromise measure.

Opposition voices warned that the decision could weaken public trust in election integrity and limit the effectiveness of reforms meant to make results immediate and verifiable.

Debate on election transparency is expected to continue as the 2027 polls approach.
