He made the remark during an appearance on Arise TV, saying he learnt of a plan to arrest him through a leaked call from the NSA’s line.

His comments have sparked calls for an investigation.

Presidential aides Bayo Onanuga and Temitope Ajayi said his admission on national television was serious and should not be ignored.

They argued that if the claim is true, it raises questions about who carried out the interception and whether laws were broken.

Some legal and security experts also said the matter could amount to a breach of national security.

The controversy deepened after El-Rufai linked former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje to the 2019 disappearance of activist Abubakar Idris, known as Dadiyata.

Ganduje, through a statement by Muhammad Garba, rejected the allegation and called it baseless.

As tensions rise ahead of 2027, the dispute has added fresh strain to Nigeria’s political climate.
