Amaechi Joins Protesters To National Assembly

Protesters again gathered at the National Assembly in Abuja on the second day of demonstrations against changes to the Electoral Act, as former Rivers State governor and ex-minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, joined the protest.

The demonstration is against the removal of real-time electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 polls.

Amaechi’s appearance added weight to the protest, which has continued to draw public figures and concerned citizens.

Tension rose at the complex as protesters faced heavy security presence, leading to a brief standoff with police officers deployed to maintain order.

Public anger over the amendment had surged a day earlier when former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, led hundreds of demonstrators to the National Assembly under the National Opposition Movement.

Protesters carried placards demanding transparent elections, with some openly calling on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step aside over the decision.

Addressing the crowd, Obi thanked Nigerians for turning out and described the protest as a lawful demand for reform.

“I want to thank the passionate Nigerians who have come out this morning to be part of this just demand for a free, transparent and fair election process,” he said, while urging calm as security agencies restricted movement beyond the gate.
