In Abuja, the Senate has fixed an emergency sitting for Tuesday, February 10, 2026, following rising tension over changes recently made to the Electoral Act.

The plan was confirmed on Sunday in a statement signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.
The clause would have made the real-time electronic upload of election results compulsory, requiring presiding officers to send results directly to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing portal.
Instead, the Senate maintained the current rule that allows results to be transferred at discretion after votes are counted and announced.
The decision has drawn criticism from civil groups and opposition figures, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the action, insisting the chamber did not oppose electronic transmission and saying it would not be intimidated as pressure mounts ahead of the emergency sitting.
