Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said Nigeria’s troubles stem from its political leaders, not ordinary citizens.

He spoke on Sunday in Ibadan during a thanksgiving service marking Oyo State’s 50th anniversary, where he addressed worshippers, officials and political figures.

Obi said the country is rich in resources but continues to struggle because of poor leadership and weak accountability.

He urged Nigerians to keep praying for those in power, admitting that politicians carry the main burden for the nation’s economic and social problems.
During the event, Obi praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for what he described as visible progress and people-focused leadership.
He said the level of development across the state stood out and showed what is possible when public funds are managed properly.
He added that he had advised Makinde at the early stage of his administration and expressed hope that Oyo State would continue on its current path.
Obi said Nigeria can still work if leaders choose to act in the public interest rather than for personal gain.
