The Ibadan explosion dispute deepened on Thursday as former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose accused Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde of sitting on federal funds meant for victims of the deadly Bodija blast.

Fayose said the money should be returned since it was not used for its purpose.
He spoke through his spokesperson in reaction to Makinde’s admission that the Federal Government released N30 billion as intervention funds after the January 16, 2024 explosion in Ibadan. Fayose said the governor failed to tell Oyo residents about the money until the issue became public.

According to Fayose, the funds were approved to support victims and affected communities, not to be kept idle. He said the Federal Government has ways to reach the victims directly if the state government is unwilling to act.
He argued that keeping N30 billion in a bank for about 18 months would have earned interest. Fayose estimated that the money should have grown by at least N4.5 billion and said the full amount must be returned.

The former governor said public office demands openness, adding that Makinde only spoke about parts of his meeting with President Bola Tinubu that suited him while hiding details that concerned the people.
Fayose warned that political ambition should not come before public welfare. He said Oyo residents deserve honesty and insisted the money, along with interest, should go back to the Federal Government for proper use.
