With less than two months to the February 21, 2026 area council elections, tension is rising in Abuja as the Labour Party warns of fallout over its possible exclusion from the polls.

The warning came on Sunday from the Julius Abure-led leadership of the party after the Independent National Electoral Commission failed to upload the names of LP candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the Federal Capital Territory.
The issue is linked to deep internal crises rocking both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, which have split their leadership into rival factions, leaving INEC unwilling to recognise candidates while court cases and disputes remain unresolved.

INEC has already removed the Labour Party from its list of eligible parties for the FCT council elections, effectively shutting it out, while the PDP remains listed but faces the risk of disqualification if its crisis drags on.
The Abure faction insists the exclusion violates a court order directing INEC to upload its candidates, warning that ignoring the ruling could attract legal consequences for the electoral body.
As the election date draws closer, uncertainty hangs over opposition participation in the FCT polls, raising fears that unresolved party disputes could deny voters wider choices and reshape the contest before campaigns even begin.
