A socio cultural group from Kwara South has opposed the proposal to rename the University of Ilorin after Sheikh Alimi, saying the move does not reflect the identity of the entire state.

The opposition came from the Kwara South Consultative Forum following the call made by the Emir of Ilorin during the university’s 50th anniversary event, which sparked reactions across different parts of the state.

The group said the University of Ilorin is a federal institution meant to serve all communities in Kwara and beyond, not a symbol for one ethnic group or historical lineage.

According to the forum, the university’s location in Ilorin does not give the host city ownership rights, warning that such a decision could deepen ethnic divisions and weaken social harmony.
It argued that many communities in Kwara South and Kwara North do not share historical ties with Sheikh Alimi, making the proposed name unsuitable for an institution owned by all.
The group advised supporters of the idea to consider naming a private university after Sheikh Alimi instead, while calling on the state government to act fairly and protect unity in Kwara State.
