Rights Group Faults Education Ministry Over 2026 WAEC Curriculum Changes
The Education Rights Campaign has criticised the Federal Ministry of Education for failing to address fears over the revised curriculum planned for the 2026 WASSCE.

The group said the Ministry’s recent statement ignored the main issue: current SSS 3 students are being asked to sit for subjects they have never been taught since SSS 1.

According to the ERC, many subjects previously taught — such as Civic Education, Computer Studies, Tourism and Insurance — have been removed from the WAEC portal because they are not in the new curriculum. This forces students across science, business and humanities classes to select unfamiliar subjects just four months before the exam.

The group argued that the new curriculum should only apply to students who began SSS 1 in 2025, meaning it should not affect WAEC exams until 2028. They cited previous announcements by the Ministry and NERDC, which had earlier emphasised a transition period.
The ERC praised the House of Representatives for directing the Ministry to halt the 2026 implementation but expressed disappointment that the Ministry continues to defend the new plan. It warned that rushing the changes is unfair and urged WAEC and the Ministry to delay implementation until 2028 to avoid disadvantaging current students.
