FCT Plans More Housing And Facilities For Judges

The Federal Capital Territory administration is moving to expand housing and improve facilities for judges as the new legal year begins.

The effort is led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who explained the steps being taken to support the judiciary and strengthen its work in Abuja.

Wike detailed the initiative during the opening session of the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the Court of Appeal. He said the government has already made fresh budget plans to build more homes for High Court judges so they can work without the pressure of poor accommodation.

The minister pointed to ongoing court projects across the FCT, including new magistrate courts in Jabi, upgraded chambers, and modern support buildings meant to create a safer and more functional space for judicial duties. He added that the FCTA has handed over full land documents to the Supreme Court and begun fencing the entire area to guard against encroachment and security risks.

The administration is also working on residential quarters for heads of courts, staff quarters for the Nigerian Law School, and new homes for justices of the Industrial Court and Federal High Court in Abuja. These projects are designed to help judges concentrate fully on their work throughout the legal year.

Wike explained that the government wants to remove housing problems that distract judicial officers. By giving them a stable living environment, the administration hopes to support quicker and more efficient delivery of justice.

He said the FCT will continue pushing reforms, including efforts to digitise court processes and reduce manual paperwork. He expressed confidence that the new legal year will bring growth, order, and stronger performance for the Court of Appeal and other courts in Abuja.
