The Federal High Court in Ibadan has moved against senior officials of the University of Ibadan after they failed to carry out a ruling that ordered the restoration of postgraduate student Kayode Bello’s access to his portal.

The court issued a contempt notice to the Vice Chancellor, the Registrar, the Provost of the Postgraduate College, the Head of the ICT unit, and the Head of the Communication and Language Arts Department. The notice states that the officials could be jailed if they continue to ignore the judgment.

The dispute began after the court ruled on October 17 that Bello’s portal must be reopened and his name returned to the graduation list. The court held that he was entitled to complete his Master’s programme, which had been stalled since his portal was blocked in 2021.

The matter escalated when checks showed that the portal still displayed an error message, even weeks after the ruling. The court noted that this refusal to obey the judgment amounts to direct defiance of its authority.
The university attempted to delay compliance by seeking a stay of execution, but Justice Evelyn Maha rejected the request on November 14. The court said the officials failed to provide any valid reason to suspend the ruling.
Bello had earlier been approved for graduation, but his name was later removed from the convocation list without explanation. His long struggle for access led to the court’s ruling, which also directed the school to restore his name and ensure all graduation steps are completed.
The court has now warned that unless the officials comply, they face the possibility of imprisonment for contempt.
