The Akwa Ibom chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party says it is not part of the convention held in Ibadan, calling the gathering illegal and without any force of law.

In a statement released in Uyo, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Edwin Ebiese, said the organisers ignored court orders that stopped the event. He noted that the Federal High Court halted the convention because party leaders failed to follow internal procedures, including the requirement that authorised officers must sign the notice of convention before it is sent to INEC.

The party praised INEC for staying away from the gathering, saying the commission’s decision showed its respect for the law. It also referenced another ruling from the Federal High Court in Abuja in a case filed by former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido, which barred the convention from taking place on November 15 and 16.

According to the statement, the event in Ibadan was nothing more than a social meeting since it violated subsisting court orders. The chapter criticised members who took part in the exercise, saying their actions went against the internal democracy they previously promoted.
The party said any decisions made at the Ibadan meeting were invalid. It urged members to stay calm and wait for the Court of Appeal to decide the matter, adding that it still has confidence in the judiciary.
