The FCT Police Command has dismissed reports that a naval officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Abuja.

The command said no incident of that nature was recorded anywhere in the Federal Capital Territory and described the circulating claims as false and capable of causing panic.

The rumour had spread after some media outlets and social media users claimed Yerima was chased by unidentified men in two unmarked Hilux vans along the Kubwa Expressway and Gado Nasco Way. The reports suggested the alleged pursuit was connected to his recent confrontation with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed land in Gaduwa District.

In a statement released on Sunday night, the FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, urged the public to ignore the story. She said the command did not receive any such report and warned against spreading unverified information.
The reminder comes days after Yerima clashed with Wike on November 11 during an inspection at a site said to belong to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd). Videos showed Yerima stopping the minister’s team from accessing the area, prompting a heated exchange. Wike accused the retired naval chief of carrying out illegal construction, while veterans and supporters defended Yerima and insisted he was acting within his duty.
Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, also addressed the controversy, assuring that no officer carrying out a lawful assignment would be punished.
