Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has dismissed claims by his successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, that his administration left behind a debt of N600 billion.

The allegations were made by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, during a briefing to mark Okpebholo’s first year in office. Afegbua said the past administration owed road contractors over N178 billion and accused Obaseki of directing contractors to obtain loans without any payment plan.

Responding through his media aide, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki described the allegations as lies intended to mislead the public. Speaking to journalists via video call, Osagie said no such debts exist and challenged the government to verify its claims through the Debt Management Office (DMO).

He said no state could incur such loans without the DMO’s approval, adding that the figure being circulated was not reflected in any official records.
Osagie criticised the Okpebholo administration for what he called “irresponsible comments” that tarnish Nigeria’s image abroad. He warned that such falsehoods could reinforce negative perceptions of the country’s governance among foreign nations.
He also addressed the controversy surrounding the Radisson Hotel project, saying its ownership and financial details were fully documented in the transition report Obaseki handed over.
“Radisson entered into a proper business agreement with the state. Every record is in the transition report,” he said.
