Northern Groups Warn Against Protests Over Nnamdi Kanu

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has cautioned Nigerians against participating in planned nationwide protests demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The group described the move as reckless and a threat to national stability.

At a press conference in Abuja, the group’s National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, said that calling for Kanu’s release without completing his trial would undermine the nation’s judicial process. He warned that bowing to public pressure would only encourage lawlessness and weaken confidence in the justice system.

CNG insisted that Kanu’s case must go through the full legal process, stressing that justice should neither be delayed nor influenced by political or emotional appeals. The group argued that allowing protests to dictate judicial outcomes would set a dangerous precedent and erode the rule of law.

The organization also urged security agencies to remain vigilant and prevent any possible breakdown of order during the demonstrations. It called for a probe into those allegedly funding or organizing the protests under the banner of human rights advocacy.

Addressing President Bola Tinubu, CNG advised him to resist political pressure and uphold the independence of the judiciary. The group said the president must avoid any action that could compromise the credibility of the nation’s legal institutions.

CNG further appealed to citizens, especially in the Southeast, to reject divisive actions and focus on peace and development. It reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and justice, stressing that peace can only be achieved when the law is allowed to take its full course.
