Panic As Kidnappers Take Over Enugu Highway

Tension gripped travelers along the Ugwuogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka road in Enugu State on Friday evening after suspected kidnappers reportedly blocked the busy highway, forcing police officers stationed nearby to flee for safety.

A viral video posted on X by a user identified as Chuks captured the chaos, showing stranded motorists and passengers trapped as gunmen held up the road. The footage, filmed by a commuter, revealed multiple vehicles at a standstill while terrified travelers called for help.

According to the video narration, the attack happened around 7 p.m. and caused widespread panic. The witness could be heard pleading for divine intervention as he described the situation, saying the entire road had been overtaken by kidnappers.

Reports say the police officers on duty at the scene abandoned their posts during the assault, leaving motorists vulnerable until soldiers from the Nigerian Army reportedly arrived to restore order.

The Ugwuogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka route, which links Nsukka to other parts of Enugu and neighboring northern communities, has become notorious for frequent abductions and armed attacks in recent months, leaving residents and commuters in constant fear.

This latest incident comes just days after violence erupted at the New Artisan Market in Enugu North, where three traders of Hausa origin were killed in a bloody clash sparked by accusations of armed robbery. Several others were injured during the confrontation, which began when traders allegedly attempted to punish one of their own for criminal activities.

The growing insecurity in Enugu State has continued to fuel public concern, as residents call for stronger security measures along highways and within local markets to protect lives and restore confidence in law enforcement.
