The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has rolled out the distribution of 370,000 sanitary pads worth N2.55 billion to schoolgirls in rural communities across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The launch took place at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja, under her Renewed Hope Initiative programme tagged Flow with Confidence. The project was flagged off by the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who represented Mrs. Tinubu at the event.

The intervention targets young girls in underserved areas who face difficulties in managing menstrual hygiene. Many of them often rely on unsafe alternatives or skip school during their periods, leading to poor academic outcomes and, in some cases, dropping out entirely.

Through this initiative, each of the states and the FCT will receive 10,000 packs of sanitary pads, to be shared through first ladies and coordinators of the Renewed Hope Initiative. Beneficiaries are expected to have access to a one-year supply of disposable pads, ensuring they do not have to sacrifice their education or dignity due to menstrual challenges.
The programme began simultaneously in eight states—Borno, Cross River, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kebbi, and Lagos—with others set to start once their consignments arrive.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Abisola Adegbite, described the initiative as a strong step toward supporting the girl-child, especially those in rural communities where access to sanitary products remains limited.
