The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the Abuja-Kaduna passenger train service will resume operations next week, ending a month-long suspension following damage to the track at Asham.

Operations were halted after the August 26 derailment, which forced the NRC to shut down the busy route. In a statement signed by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation said repair works and safety checks on the affected section have been completed.

Unyimadu explained that the NRC had worked to restore both the infrastructure and rolling stock to global safety standards. He added that 512 out of the 583 passengers on board the affected train have been refunded, with efforts ongoing to settle the remaining passengers.

The August 26 derailment occurred shortly after the train left Abuja for Kaduna, sparking panic among passengers. A preliminary report by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau linked the incident to poor maintenance and a faulty track switch that had been manually secured with a broken point clip.
The report further revealed that damaged sleepers were only patched instead of being fully repaired, while NRC personnel had not undergone refresher training, raising fresh concerns about safety and maintenance standards.
