Obi Urges Tinubu To Use Surplus Revenue For Jobs And Pensions

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to channel Nigeria’s reported revenue surplus into job creation, pension payments, and other sectors that directly impact citizens.

In a post on his verified X handle yesterday, Obi criticised the Federal Government for celebrating early revenue achievements while millions of Nigerians continue to battle poverty, unemployment, and unpaid entitlements.

He noted that several businesses, especially small and medium enterprises, are struggling to survive due to lack of funding, with some resorting to protests as they fail to meet obligations to banks and employees.

Obi also condemned the condition of retired civil servants and military personnel, many of whom, he said, have been protesting unpaid pensions and gratuities despite their years of service to the country.

“It is shameful that those who built this nation with their sweat, those who defended it with their lives, and those who fulfilled their obligations are reduced to begging for what is rightfully theirs, even after the government boasted of excess revenue,” he wrote.

He stressed that revenue growth is meaningless unless it improves the living standards of Nigerians, warning that the country cannot continue to push its citizens into debt and despair.

Obi ended his message with his recurring call for reforms, declaring: “A New Nigeria is possible.”
