The Federal Government has welcomed the conviction of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court on terrorism charges.

A district court in Paijat-Hame, Finland, sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison after finding him guilty of inciting terrorism, participating in terrorist activities, and using his online platforms to fuel violence in Nigeria’s South-East.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), in a statement yesterday, commended Finland for its cooperation, describing the ruling as a boost to Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.

“We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court. His conviction confirms his role in crimes against Nigerians, especially in the South-East. We commend the Finnish authorities and see this as a signal of future collaboration,” Fagbemi said.
According to Finnish newspaper Yle, the court ruled that Ekpa used his wide social media influence between August 2021 and November 2024 to incite violence, supply armed groups with weapons and explosives, and encourage followers to commit crimes in Nigeria.
The three-member panel of judges described him as an influential figure in a militant separatist movement whose goal was to establish an independent Biafra state.
