Tinubu, Shettima, Governors Mourn Emir of Zuru

President Bola Tinubu has sent condolences to the people of Kebbi State over the death of the Emir of Zuru, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (Gomo II), who passed away at 81.

In a statement by his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late monarch as a patriot who served Nigeria with honour both as a military governor of Bauchi State and as a traditional ruler. Tinubu recalled his role during the civil war and his efforts in bringing peace and development to the Zuru Emirate, praying for Allah’s comfort for his family and subjects.

Vice President Kashim Shettima also paid tribute, calling the Emir’s death a great loss to Nigeria’s traditional and military institutions. He likened him to a “giant Iroko” whose absence leaves a deep void, stressing his rare blend of military discipline and traditional wisdom. Shettima prayed for his soul and extended condolences on behalf of the Federal Government.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed described the late Emir as a patriot, disciplinarian and visionary who left indelible marks both as military governor of old Bauchi State and later as a traditional ruler. He noted that Sami’s reign was defined by fairness, inclusiveness and humility, praying for Allah’s mercy on him.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris said the Emir was a respected leader whose wisdom and fatherly guidance would be missed. He praised his role as a peace-builder and man of integrity who dedicated his life to the service of his people.

Other tributes came from Zuru Emirate leaders, who remembered him as a soldier, administrator and monarch who promoted peaceful coexistence and cultural development.

The late Emir, who joined the Nigerian Army in 1962, served as military governor in Sokoto and Bauchi states and held key positions including Commander of the Brigade of Guards before ascending the throne in 1995. He is survived by four wives and seven children.
