Lawyer and human rights activist Dele Farotimi has raised concerns over Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s proposal to serve only one term if elected in 2027.

Speaking in an interview aired on Sunday, Farotimi recalled that Obi first made the same promise during the 2023 election, but argued that the motivation behind such a pledge deserves deeper scrutiny. He asked what Obi intends to achieve within four years, stressing that any true vision for a nation should extend beyond the lifetime of one leader.

Farotimi noted that while questions about time are important, what truly matters is how effectively a leader uses the years in office. He argued that if Obi already has well-prepared plans for Nigeria, he would not necessarily need two terms to implement them and bring change.

He pointed to past administrations as examples, saying former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari both completed eight years each without delivering the transformation Nigerians expected. He added that President Bola Tinubu has spent over two years in office, yet citizens are still grappling with worsening conditions.

According to Farotimi, leadership should not be judged solely by the number of years spent in office but by the impact made within the available time.
