The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Dr Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress winner of the Edo Central Senatorial District bye election held on Saturday.

The announcement was made in the early hours of Sunday by the Returning Officer, Prof Kingsley Omo Iwoze, at Ubiaja, headquarters of Esan South East Local Government Area.

Ikpea secured 105,129 votes to defeat his closest rival, Joe Okojie of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 15,146 votes. The wide margin ended weeks of intense campaigns across the district.

The seat became vacant after Monday Okpebholo, who previously represented the district, was sworn in as Governor of Edo State. The bye election was conducted to fill the position in line with INEC’s guidelines.
Following his victory, Ikpea expressed gratitude to the people of Edo Central, describing their support as a choice for progress and development. He assured that he would provide quality representation and pledged to focus on infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and support for traditional institutions.
