Aregbesola Rallies ADC Against Tinubu, Lagos APC Calls Move ‘Betrayal’

Former Interior Minister and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has launched a membership drive in Lagos for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), vowing to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) dominance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Aregbesola, expelled from the APC in January, now serves as ADC National Secretary and its leading figure in the South-West. Speaking to supporters — in a gathering notably smaller than his past Lagos rallies — he accused major parties, including the APC, of failing Nigerians and urged mass mobilisation for the ADC. He promised a “new deal” to reset Nigeria on a path of development, while urging voters to protect their votes.

The Lagos APC, through spokesman Seye Oladejo, denounced Aregbesola’s comments as political opportunism and a betrayal, stressing that he had benefited from the party for over two decades. The party maintained that Lagos remains a model of progressive governance and warned voters to be wary of politicians who distance themselves from problems they helped create.

While there are no by-elections in Lagos or Osun, Aregbesola is expected to help drive ADC campaigns in Oyo and Ogun. The upcoming by-elections in 14 states will serve as an early test of ADC’s coalition plans for 2027.
