Former Sokoto State governor and serving senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has been released on administrative bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after being questioned over alleged financial misconduct.

His release came on Tuesday evening following his arrest a day earlier. The EFCC said the bail was granted to allow investigators complete their work before any court appearance.

Tambuwal’s arrest sparked a political storm, with the African Democratic Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party accusing the anti-graft agency of being used to intimidate opposition leaders ahead of future elections. The ADC claimed the move was part of a wider plan to discredit senior figures in opposition parties, naming former Imo governor Emeka Ihedioha and ADC chairman David Mark as other targets of investigation. The party alleged the timing of these probes showed they were politically driven rather than based on fresh evidence.

The PDP’s Sokoto State chapter also condemned the arrest, calling it a politically motivated attempt to tarnish Tambuwal’s reputation. The party described the investigation as a recycled case lacking merit and accused the EFCC of ignoring corruption allegations against certain ruling party members while pursuing opposition leaders.
The EFCC dismissed the allegations, saying its investigations cut across all political divides. It stated that there was no time limit on probing corruption and that all credible allegations must be examined, regardless of when they occurred. The agency denied working for any political party, insisting it was funded by taxpayers and accountable to Nigerians, not politicians.
Tambuwal remains under investigation, and the EFCC maintains that no one is beyond scrutiny in the fight against corruption.
