Aviation Minister Ends Airport Misconduct Cases Against Passenger and Singer

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has ordered the withdrawal of criminal complaints against passenger Comfort Emmanson and popular musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, also known as KWAM 1.

The decision follows two separate incidents of unruly behaviour at airports that drew widespread public attention.

Keyamo said the move came after two days of consultations with major aviation stakeholders, during which all parties agreed that lessons had been learned from the incidents. He noted that the cases underscored the need for the travelling public to respect aviation rules and for airport staff to handle conflicts professionally.

The first case involved Emmanson, who was accused of disruptive conduct on an Ibom Air flight on August 10. According to the minister, she showed remorse during a police interview, prompting the airline to withdraw its complaint. Keyamo also confirmed that the Airline Operators of Nigeria agreed to lift the lifetime flying ban placed on her. Steps are now underway for her release from custody.

In the second case, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has decided to reduce KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month and will drop criminal complaints against him. The musician is also expected to work with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on a public awareness campaign promoting proper airport conduct.

Other cases resolved include the reinstatement of licenses for ValueJet’s Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba after a one-month suspension and mandatory professional assessment.

Keyamo has directed aviation agencies to hold a retreat next week to retrain security personnel on de-escalation techniques and the handling of difficult passengers. The airlines will also participate in sessions focused on improving staff relations with passengers.

The minister said the decisions were taken on compassionate grounds while stressing that safety and security in the aviation sector remain a priority for the government.
