Nizamiye Hospital Rejects Claim It Withheld Treatment From Late Senator

Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja has denied allegations that it refused to carry out a life-saving procedure on former Niger North senator, Ibrahim Musa Kontagora, due to incomplete payment.

Kontagora, who served in the Senate from 2011 to 2015, died at the hospital after spending more than a week in a coma. An online report had alleged that the hospital declined to operate on him because his family had not paid the full $30,000 bill.

In a statement on Friday, hospital spokesman Mohammed Abubakar said no surgery was planned for the late senator apart from a shunt procedure, which had already been completed to address blood clotting. He explained that the only subsequent medical advice given was to consider stem cell therapy — a treatment the hospital does not perform.

According to Abubakar, stem cell treatment is coordinated externally with international specialists, and the hospital’s role is limited to linking interested patients with those providers. He said the senator’s relatives had even contacted the hospital recently to help reach out to the specialists.

The hospital dismissed claims of withholding treatment over unpaid bills, insisting there was no record of a $15,000 payment or any outstanding balance for stem cell therapy. Abubakar added that the family still had funds in the senator’s hospital account and no advance payment was requested for any in-house procedure after the shunt.

The management urged anyone alleging a pending surgery or payment dispute to present proof, maintaining that the hospital did not abandon the patient at any stage of his care.
