Police Explain Reasons For Continued Detention Of Sowore

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, has said human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore is being held over two separate petitions alleging forgery and cyberbullying.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja while addressing protesters demanding Sowore’s release, Shogunle said the activist was shown both petitions in the presence of his lawyers. One petition accuses him of publishing a forged police document online, while the other relates to alleged cyberbullying.

Shogunle said Sowore refused to make a statement during interrogation, even with his legal counsel present. He explained that while the law gives a suspect the right to remain silent, it also allows the police to carry out certain procedures if a suspect chooses not to speak.

Responding to questions about why Sowore has been held beyond the 24 hours stipulated in the constitution, the police chief insisted that due process was being followed. He maintained that the activist’s rights were not being violated and that the procedures for detention were in line with legal provisions.

Shogunle also offered to allow some protesters to see Sowore in custody to confirm he had not been mistreated.

Sowore was invited to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday by the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit and has remained in detention since. His arrest has sparked protests in Lagos, Abuja, Osun, and Oyo, with supporters demanding his release.

The activist has recently led demonstrations for better welfare for retired police officers and criticised a recent promotion exercise in the police force.
