Nnamdi Kanu Sues Reno Omokri For N60bn Over Social Media Post

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has taken legal action against former presidential aide Reno Omokri, demanding N60 billion in damages.

The lawsuit, filed at the Enugu State High Court, stems from a post made by Omokri on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, which Kanu claims wrongly accused him and IPOB of being behind violent attacks in the Southeast.

The legal action was initiated by Kanu’s legal team, led by Special Counsel Aloy Ejimakor, on behalf of both Kanu and IPOB. The suit alleges that Omokri’s post linked Kanu and IPOB to the killing of security personnel and described them as terrorists. Kanu argues that such claims were not only false and baseless but also damaging to his public image and unfairly affected his ongoing legal case in Abuja.

The events unfolded after Omokri made a post on July 6, 2025, in which he referenced violence in the Southeast and tied it to IPOB and its security wing, the Eastern Security Network. The message suggested that many of the victims were from Northern Nigeria. Kanu’s legal team believes this statement went beyond public commentary and entered the realm of defamation, as there has been no court judgment linking Kanu to the crimes mentioned.

Kanu’s lawyers had earlier issued a formal notice to Omokri, asking for a public apology, a retraction of the statement, and a written promise to avoid further defamatory comments. The notice also demanded that the apology and retraction be published in two national newspapers and on Omokri’s social media page. However, after Omokri reportedly ignored these demands, the case was taken to court.

The suit is seeking N50 billion in general damages for harm to Kanu’s reputation and emotional wellbeing, and an additional N10 billion in aggravated damages, citing what Kanu’s team described as malicious intent behind the post. The legal team is also asking the court to order Omokri to publicly retract the statements and issue an apology in print and online. They are also requesting a court injunction to stop him from repeating such comments in the future.

In addition to the monetary compensation, Kanu is demanding that Omokri bear all legal costs and that interest be applied to any financial judgment until full payment is made. The suit is marked E/1034/2025 and has been filed at the Enugu Judicial Division of the State High Court. The court is expected to announce a date for the hearing soon.
