The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the federal government, threatening a total and indefinite strike if long-standing welfare concerns are not addressed.

In a communiqué released after an emergency meeting held in Abuja on July 26, the association accused the Bola Tinubu-led administration of failing to act on critical issues affecting the medical profession and the health sector at large.

The NMA said the recent suspension — rather than a full withdrawal — of a controversial circular from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC) on the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) was unacceptable. It also cited the non-payment of seven months’ arrears from a 25/35% salary adjustment, failure to implement collective bargaining agreements, and ongoing neglect of the healthcare system.

Signed by NMA President Prof. Bala Audu and Secretary General Dr. Jamin Egbo, the communiqué warned that the government’s failure to respond would further cripple the country’s already struggling health system.
“The EDM issued a 21-day notice of total and indefinite strike, effective from July 27, 2025… should the government fail to comprehensively address the association’s demands,” the statement read.
The association also condemned the rise in medical tourism among top officials, calling it a vote of no confidence in Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.
While commending its leadership and technical negotiation team, the NMA urged all Nigerian doctors to remain united and prepared for industrial action if the government fails to act within the given window.
