Kano Government Begins Probe Into Deaths of Two Boarding School Students

The Kano State Government has launched an investigation into the deaths of two students at Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, after they were reportedly attacked by their fellow students using locally made metal rods known as “Gwale-Gwale.”

The two victims, Hamza Tofawa and Umar Dungurawa, were said to have been targeted by senior students as punishment for allegedly breaking school rules. The violent attack led to their deaths, sparking outrage and concern among parents and the wider public.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, directed the probe through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Bashir Muhammad, during a visit to the school. The commissioner assured the public that the government is committed to a full and fair investigation, promising that those involved will face the consequences of their actions.

According to preliminary reports, the attack was premeditated and carried out by older students who claimed they were disciplining the younger ones. The commissioner condemned the incident and warned all students against taking the law into their own hands. He urged students to report any issues to school authorities instead of resorting to violence.

In response to the tragedy, school officials, including the Director of the Secondary School Department under the Senior Secondary School Management Board, Abbas Abdullahi, expressed sadness and described the incident as a misuse of power by the perpetrators. He called for calm and cooperation as authorities begin investigations.

Condolence messages have poured in from across the state, with government officials offering prayers and sympathy to the families of the deceased. The state government says no effort will be spared in uncovering the truth and ensuring that justice is done.
